Strategic Boards Think Bigger: YDI’s Approach to Smarter Leadership

February 18, 2025

Stock Image - Strategic PlanningPMA had the privilege of facilitating a board strategy workshop for Youth Development Initiatives (YDI), where we explored the importance of board members becoming "students of the sector" to elevate their strategic contributions.

With staff input, each board member adopted a comparable organization to YDI, and will return to the next meeting to share:

1️⃣ Programming Insights: How is their programming similar to - and different from - YDI?
2️⃣ Funding Models: How is their organization funded, and what can YDI learn from their model?
3️⃣ Collaboration Opportunities: Are there potential partnerships or chances to collaborate on advocacy and programming?

This approach ensures board members get broader sector knowledge, gain a greater appreciation for the work already being done at YDI, and avoid the narrow focus of simply "comparing what we're doing this year to last year". It may also lead to greater board-to-board and staff-to-staff networking as well.

👏 Shout-out to the outstanding staff leaders Darryl Bego and Natasha R Witherspoon, who are taking YDI's unique programs to even greater heights thanks to the dedication of board leaders like Delvin Joyce, CFP®, CLU®, ChFC®, RICP®, Matt Potere, Sabrina L. Brown, Desmond A. Wiggan Jr., Chris Kastler, and Alicia Ibanez.
